I think it is a response to the market. My theory: The Baby Boomers families are grown, and they are at the peak of their earning power. At this point, they are able to vote with their dollars, and they are supporting energy alternatives, even if it costs a few pennies more. For example, I know that, even though it often costs a little more, I personally have switched to buying gas at BP. I want to reward and encourage their research into renewable energy. They aren't "perfect," but they are making an effort.

That reminds me on another story:

"Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin. It is, as far as he knows, the only way of coming downstairs, but sometimes he feels that there is another way, if only he could stop bumping for a moment and think of it..."

Potential Growth and Potentials for Growth in Europe: Measurement, Determinants and Implications
Leuven, Belgium

Date: June 2006
Deadline: 31st March 2006

The process of European integration, having primarily started as a way of achieving political stability and peace, became a major force towards reaping the benefits of economic integration. The creation of first a customs union and then a single European market were major projects to realize these potentials for growth. Still, Europe has not been able to close the historical productivity gap relative to the US. For a long time the performance of several European economies, including the biggest economies in the eurozone, has been disappointing. Globalization, unemployment, enlargement, the economic and social consequences of an ageing population provide new challenges. On the other hand, the assessment of European growth performance depends also on measurement and comparisons and can vary accordingly.

Hey Nadya - great to see a BAWB blog.

In the spirit of generating debate, I would point out that you already have stories about the empowerment of women (e.g. Shakti and DuPont) and it is common practice by development agencies and micro lenders to favor and support women led initiatives and businesses. It is even one of the UN Millennium Development Goals.

So it seems to me then that the question about whether "Ladies who Launch" is suitable for the Innovation Bank is less about women in general, than about how the Innovation Bank views women in Chagrin Falls with a bright pink webpage! Does this in some way not sit well with our social benefit images?

Are we limiting our definition of social benefit to images of the developing world poor?

Provided that their motivation and intention is around the upliftment of women (and this is not something I have insight on), I think Ladies who Launch is potentially fantastic for the empowerment of women in Cleveland for example - and there is no doubt in my mind that economically empowered women are of HUGE social benefit to this economically challenged city.

So for me, yes, Ladies who Launch is a social benefit. When the day arrives that women have true equality of access and opportunity in this country and around the world, you might want to reconsider, but for now, I think its good.

Would I design the look and feel of their website like that? No. But that’s not the point in question.
