There is increasing recognition that the current "system" for achieving good labor and environmental practices in global supply chains through private codes of conduct and monitoring, is not working. With a focus on developing nations, this report presents recommendations identifying ways the public sector can mobilize its resources and those of others to improve delivery on these important goals.

The first large-scale study analysing the business case for sustainability in emerging markets, Developing Value: The Business Case for Sustainability in Emerging Markets aims to help business managers understand the opportunities, risks and bottom line implications of sustainability strategies. Includes analysis of over 240 company examples from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Central & Eastern Europe and the report uncovers examples of higher sales, reduced costs and lower risks from better corporate governance, improved environmental practices, and investments in social and economic development.


Environment Matters, 2004: World Bank Group >>

This year's edition of Environment Matters, dedicated to Economic Growth and the Environment, brings together a wide variety of external and internal viewpoints on the challenges ahead and the progress taking place. Three major partner countries- China, India and Mexico- present their perspectives. Also included are viewpoints from the academic world, the NGO sector, and civil society. Among other topics, this edition features the World Bank's recent research on what happens to environment during growth and the different tools available to promote environmentally and socially sustainable economic growth. It also includes reviews of the World Bank's environmental programs in developing countries and its global engagement.
